David Messina is from Bay Village, Ohio and now lives as a freelance bassist in the greater Louisville area and frequently performs with professional orchestras in the region. He has been a member of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra since 1984 and the Owensboro Symphony since 2024. David has performed with the Columbus Symphony,Dayton Philharmonic, Orchestra Kentucky Bowling Green, Kentucky Bach Choir, and Paducah Symphony. He studied bass at Ohio University from 1980-1984 and was the Professor of Bass at Ohio University for ten years. His greatest musical influence was his bass teacher Albert Laszlo. David also loves playing electric bass and was a member of the Athens, Ohio Latin band “Los Viejos Blanquitos.” His many musical talents also include playing tuba in a brass quintet with his friends and wife, trumpeter Erika Howard, and performing on tuba for special celebrations at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Anchorage, Kentucky.
David is the owner of Messina Covers, a small sewing business dating back to 1998. He began making colorful and custom carrying cases for double basses, and upon meeting his lovely wife they began making cases for trumpet, low brass, percussion, and conductors’ scores. Their products are beloved for their customization and customer service.
When not performing and sewing, David enjoys riding his bicycles, rock climbing, playing Fallout 76, and spending time with his pet ball pythons.
