About the Owensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra

The Owensboro Symphony, through its sponsorship of the Owensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra program, provides specialized training to more than 100 talented young musicians each year. The Owensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra program dedicates itself to building on the success of school programs by offering outstanding students music that continues to challenge them in their growth. The program consists of two performing ensembles: the Youth Orchestra, a full orchestra experience, and the String Orchestra.

The String Orchestra provides young students the opportunity to perform with other musicians as they refine their musical abilities until they are ready for the more advanced literature typically played by the Youth Orchestra.  This group is targeted towards students who may be taking private lessons outside of a school environment, as well as advancing middle school orchestra students, and even high school students who are not yet comfortable with advanced literature.  String Orchestra students rehearse together on Mondays from 4 – 5:30 p.m. each week and perform three concerts each year along with the Youth Orchestra. There is no audition required and membership in the String Orchestra is by recommendation of the student’s school orchestra director or private teacher. It is preferred the student have a minimum of two years of training before joining. Recommendations can be sent to Youth Orchestra Coordinator, Greg Olson at [email protected]

Rehearsals for the Youth Orchestra and the String Orchestra begin Monday, September 18 at the Owensboro Symphony, 211 East Second Street, Owensboro, KY.
